USC Spatial Sciences Institute had a high-impact week at the 2018 Esri User Conference in San Diego, California from July 10-14. USC Spatial faculty, students, alumni, and staff were among the 16,000+ GIS professionals who participated in the annual gathering to learn about new Esri products and services, discuss the future of the industry, and network with colleagues.
USC Spatial contributed to the proceedings as students, alumni, faculty, and staff presented posters and gave talks on a variety of topics.
Twenty SSI representatives gave talks and poster presentations. USC Spatial talks were given by:
• Jenora D’Acosta (M.S. GIST ’15) on spatial statistics and spatial data mining;
• Diana Kim (B.S. GeoDesign ’17) and Thwe Thwe Soe (B.S. GeoDesign ’17) presented on “Applications for GeoDesign”;
• Marisol Maciel-Cervantes (M.S. GIST ’17) on “Site Selection for Higher Density Affordable Rental Housing”;
• Corina Chung (M.S. GIST ’13) on “Measuring and Mapping Access to Public Transit”;
• Tierney Booker (M.S. GIST student) on “Data Journalism in 4D with Living Atlas and Story Maps”;
• Dr. Jennifer Swift on “Integrated Teaching Components in the USC SSI Private Cloud and AWS”; and
• Dr. Robert Vos on “Practical Experiences with ArcGIS in Education.”

The annual highlight of the Esri UC week is USC Spatial’s popular reception on Tuesday evening where past, current, and prospective students enjoyed good food and conversation with faculty, members of industry, and Institute friends in the fun and relaxed atmosphere of Roy’s on the waterfront.
