Dr. Steven L. Lamy, professor emeritus of political science and international relations and spatial sciences, explains in his article in The Conversation why no one should be surprised that Finland and Sweden, historically neutral countries, have applied for full NATO membership.
Dr. Lamy opines that both Finland and Sweden see the priority of protecting their independence and the concept of democratic governance. As Russia asserts authoritarian power, he describes how Putin's strategy has backfired.
Interested in studying with Dr. Lamy? He is teaching a new course, GSEC 501: Foundations of Global Security, in Fall 2022 in the new M.A. in Global Security Studies program.
