Join us virtually with UCLA and SC mappers in our 4th annual humanitarian mapathon challenge to make entries on the OpenStreetMap platform in support of priority humanitarian relief efforts around the world!
Last year’s mapathon was one of the world’s largest single-day events with 150 mappers collectively mapping 17,126 buildings. Help us break our record by mapping more than 20,000 buildings this year over 3 days. See the mapathon schedule below.
No GIS skills are required! We will quickly train you to use OpenStreetMap (OSM) to assist in humanitarian projects around the world.

Day 1: Wednesday, October 28, 2020 – Kick Off
- 10 am PT: Welcome from Yoh Kawano at UCLA and Andy Rutkowski at USC and start mapping.
- 10:30 am + 12:30 pm + 2:30 pm + 4:30 pm PT: Hands on training throughout the day. If you miss the first training, come back at any of the times listed above.
Day 2: Thursday, October 29, 2020 – A Day of Workshops
- 9 am PT: Open Street Map and Python
- 11 am PT: Mapping in Tableau
- 1 pm PT: GIS with R
- 3 pm PT: Intro to QGIS
12 am PT (midnight): Mapping Ends
Day 3: Friday, October 30, 2020 -Celebration
- 10 am PT: A Conversation with Ben Welsh, editor, Data and Graphics Department, Los Angeles Times
- 11 am PT: The Big Reveal and Celebratory Remarks
