Today the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) announced funding for a collaborative research and development project by Dr. Yao-Yi Chiang of the USC Spatial Sciences Institute with Deborah Holmes-Wong of the USC Digital Library entitled “Unlocking Maps: Automatic and Streamlined Metadata Creation for Digital Collections.”
With this NEH grant funding, Chiang, an assistant professor of research in spatial sciences, will further develop his map processing software to produce more techniques for automatically generating metadata from scanned maps. The USC Digital Library then will deploy Chiang’s techniques their cloud infrastructure to test the feasibility for processing a large number of maps automatically.
This grant to USC was one of 290 projects receiving NEH funding for a total of $16.3 million in grants to support a variety of humanities-based research and programs.
