This second edition of the GIS and Spatial Humanities workshop will cover principles of geographic information science (GIS) and accompanying geospatial tools and data to explore a variety of important topics in the humanities for faculty and doctoral students from USC and other institutions. This workshop is part of the 2019 USC Humanities in a Digital World Program Summer Boot Camp presented by the USC Digital Humanities Program.
The workshop will incorporate lectures and readings to introduce the role of GIS and maps as media, the art and science of geocoding, georeferencing and the role of gazetteers in turning text into maps and data which can be used for spatial analysis, geovisualization, and story-telling. Participants will work with digital tools, receive guidance on individual research projects and access a learning module created by the USC Libraries on archiving and the creation of metadata.
The workshop runs from Monday, June 17 to Friday, June 21, 2019 in the USC Spatial Sciences Institute conference room and computer lab in AHF B55.
The workshop presenters are John P. Wilson, Ph.D., professor of sociology and spatial sciences and founding director of the USC Spatial Sciences Institute, and Beau MacDonald, GIS project specialist, USC Spatial Sciences Institute.
