“Environmental exposures and health: spatial science applications in epidemiology”
Location plays an important role in human health – where we live, work, and spend our time is associated with different exposures (e.g., environmental) that may influence the risk of developing disease. Spatial science, particularly methods in geographic information systems (GIS) and remote sensing, enables the incorporation of location-based information to clarify how environmental factors may impact health in epidemiologic studies. This talk will present research that harnesses spatial methods to investigate the associations between environmental exposures, including radon, dioxin, ultraviolet radiation, and pesticides, and the risk of developing cancers of the breast and liver in the Nurses’ Health Study II prospective cohort, Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER), and SEER-Medicare.
