The International Encyclopedia of Human Geography (second edition) has published the article “Feminist Methodologies” by Population, Health and Place doctoral student Shea Gilliam.
In this paper in The International Encyclopedia of Human Geography, Gilliam, a second year student, explores the application of feminist methodologies to geography and the spatial sciences.
Practitioners of feminist methodologies within geography have engaged with key feminist analyses, philosophies of feminist scholarship, and feminist methodologies within geography, including qualitative and quantitative methods. In particular, Gilliam assesses the major contributions of feminist methodologies to the field of geography by critiquing ontological and epistemological claims, which privilege masculinist worldviews, knowledge, and knowers; reshaping dominant research theories and practices, bringing attention to the presence and absence of particular bodies, subjects, and knowledges in geographical knowledge; and highlighting critical reflexivity as an important research process.
Co-authoring this article with Gilliam was Deborah Thien, Ph.D., Professor of Geography and Affiliate Faculty in Women’s, Gender and Sexuality Studies at the California State University, Long Beach.
