Shea Ellen Gilliam comes to the Population, Health and Place program from a spatial sciences background. She obtained her bachelor's degree in geography with dual specializations in Geospatial Analytics and Human Geography from California State University, Long Beach in 2015. In 2018, she was awarded a master's degree in Geography from San Diego State University where her thesis research involved a thirteen-month ethnographic study exploring the integration of transgender athletes into the formerly cis-centric spaces of women's roller derby.
Shea has presented original research at numerous national and international conferences, including both the 2015 and 2017 International Conference on Emotional Geographies, and served as a panelist at the 2019 AAG conference. Her awards include the 2013 Southern California Association of Governments Outstanding Student Award and first prize in the 2018 AAG Sexualities and Space Student Paper Competition.
Her ongoing research interests include emergency healthcare access along racial, ethnic and class lines; spatiotemporal analytics and statistical methods; and socio-spatial theories of gender and sexuality.
