Annual GIS Day

Join USC Spatial Studies minors, GeoDesign majors, and graduate GIST students and faculty as they celebrate GIS Day, demonstrating real-world GIS applications making a difference in society.  The SSI 2013 Balloon Launch was one of 1,000+ events in 98 countries around the world.

Annual Los Angeles Geospatial Summit

Calling all geospatial infovores: gather at the annual Los Angeles Geospatial Summit each February.  Discuss emerging trends in geospatial science, technology, and applications with industry leaders and GIS faculty and students at this one-day networking event presented by the USC Spatial Sciences Institute.

Save the date for the Friday, February 27, 2015 Geospatial Summit.

Collaborating academic programs: California State University, Channel Islands; California State University, Long Beach; California State University, Los Angeles; California State University Northridge; Cal Poly Pomona; Claremont Graduate University; County of Los Angeles; Loma Linda University; Loyola Marymount University; Occidental College; University of California, Los Angeles; and University of Redlands.

Student Opportunities:

Undergraduate and graduate students in GIS and related geospatial disciplines can:

  • Present 10-minute papers with five-minute Q & A at the Summit,  an important career development opportunity.  To apply, submit 200-word abstracts to your academic program directors.  The USC Spatial Sciences Institute will notify selected students by the end of January, 2015 for the February 27, 2015 Summit.
  • Learn from industry leader speakers.
  • Network throughout the day, at the Industry Fair, and closing reception.

Industry professionals:

  • Share your insights about emerging geospatial trends.
  • Create greater awareness for your company at the new Industry Fair.
  • Expand your contacts with other LA-based geospatial professionals

SSI @ Esri International User Conference

Every July, Spatial Sciences Institute faculty, staff, students, alumni, and collaborators are part of the largest geo event in the world at the San Diego Convention Center.  Plan now to hear the presentations by SSI faculty, students, and alumni, and join us for the SSI reception at Roy's Hawaiian Fuson Restaurant the evening of Tuesday, July 15, 2014.

The Spatial Sciences Institute brings together the USC geospatial community for colloquia in the fall and spring semesters.  On Thursday, April 24, 2014, hear Dr. Werner Kuhn speak on "Organizing Knowledge Around Spatio-temporal Questions" in the Hedco Neurosciences Building Auditorium (HNB 100), from 4:00 - 5:30 pm.  Dr. Kuhn, director of the UC Santa Barbara Center for Spatial Studies, professor of Geography, and the Jack and Laura Dangermond Endowed Chair, is a leading expert in geospatial semantics, Semantic Reference Systems, and on desktop metaphors for GIS.
