On Wednesday, January 31, 2018, USC Dornsife Spatial Sciences Institute faculty and students in the USC Age-Friendly Los Angeles “Wicked Problems” Practicum will join colleagues from across the university in presenting their findings on ways to make the City of Los Angeles a better place in which to age. At this practicum final event, the practicum leaders from USC Spatial, the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology, the Keck School of Medicine, and the Sol Price School of Public Policy will introduce five lifespan improvement districts in Cudahy, Glendale, Little Tokyo, the USC Neighborhood, and Vista West.
The presentation will showcase the website, web applications, story maps, case studies, and testimonials developed by students and other participants over the fall 2017 semester to tell layered stories about aging in Los Angeles that can serve as a resource for community leaders and residents. The geovisualization and other spatial sciences approaches bring together data and other information that will support the needs of older adults. For example, the users of the website and apps can easily get answers to questions such as, “Which bus stops have benches? What is my emergency evacuation plan? Where are free flu shots offered?”
Laura Trejo, General Manager of the City of Los Angeles Department of Aging, also will be a featured speaker.
USC Spatial Associate Professor Jennifer Swift co-led the practicum course with Caroline Cicero, an assistant professor at the USC Leonard Davis School. Other participating faculty were USC Spatial Associate Professor Darren Ruddell, USC Leonard Davis Assistant Professor and USC Spatial Faculty Affiliate Jennifer Ailshire, USC Keck Assistant Professor Annie Nguyen, and USC Price Professor Tridib Banerjee.
The Wicked Problems Practicum is funded by the USC Office of the Provost to tackle society's intractable and multi-faceted problems.
