In his seminal book Design with Nature, Ian McHarg articulated ground-breaking concepts in ecological planning and what later became geographic information science.  Learn about the roots of GeoDesign from Donald H. Brackenbush, who knew McHarg well and who worked with him on the production of Design with Nature.

Brackenbush studied with McHarg as an architecture and planning student at the University of Pennsylvania and was the western regional manager of McHarg’s firm, Wallace, McHarg, Roberts and Todd.  Brackenbush went on to become a “Renaissance man” of the built environment: an architect, urban planner, and real estate developer.  He has worked around the world, from Libya to Italy, from master-planned communities to asset development.  His projects include the award-winning 5,500-acre Ahmanson Ranch New Community in Ventura County, California while he was president of the Ahmanson Land Company, a subsidiary of Home Savings of America.  Most recently, Brackenbush has been advising numerous private and public institutions as to the development and/or disposition of surplus property as well as locating property for expansion.

He holds a M. A. Architecture and M. A. City Planning, both from the University of Pennsylvania and a B. A. Architectural Engineering, Ohio University. He is a member of the American Institute of Architects and the American Institute of Certified Planners. He is a past chairman of Urban Land Institute Los Angeles District Council and continues to serve on the ULI LA Advisory Committee.
